I got called out once. I was doing some card tricks on the beach and a girl asked me if I could do more tricks with her deck. I told her yes and she went to her car and brought out the deck. Luckily I knew a few card tricks with zero set-up. In my experience, if you know at least 5 good tricks with a normal shuffled deck than you are set for any situation.

Natan: Although we'd disagree that they know about shells and swaps, they would THINK they know solutions, such as duplicate or marked cards. As Darwin Ortiz writes, using a borrowed deck would remove solutions -- similar to what the other commenters are saying. But are we denying ourselves the performance of effects just because they CAN'T be done with a "borrowed deck?"
